Restoration of wetlands and peatlands in the Centre Region (RePeat)

Project title:
"Rehabilitation of wetlands and peatlands in the Center Region (RePeat)"

Total project budget: 4.218.620,36 lei (852.280,97 Euro)

Funding source: Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area (SEE) 2014-2021

Implementation period: 2022 – 2024

The general objective of the project consists in intervention works, in order to stop the biodiversity loss of the peatland ecosystems in the Center area, the restoration of their water system, as well as the continuous monitoring of the ecological restoration works.

Specific objectives

  • Identification and evaluation of areas and subareas that require ecological restoration;
  • Elimination / reduction of the anthropogenic impact through restoration and optimization of the hydrological regime of peatland ecosystems;
  • Greening and eliminating invasive vegetation ;
  • Reconditioning and creation of thematic routes for educational purposes and for minimizing the impact of uncontrolled tourism;

Prior- and post-intervention monitoring.

Concise presentation of the main activities

The proposed project comprises two main types of activities. The first one aims to monitor and assess the state of degradation of peatlands (this activity is necessary because the state of peatlands has changed considerably since the previous evaluation, which was carried out within the PeatRO project), to assess the peatland ecosystems, the hydrogeological and geomorphological regime, to evaluate the physico-chemical characteristics of the peat layer and water sources. The second type of activities includes ecological rehabilitation works, and aims to reduce / eliminate the impact of grazing, to restore the optimal water regime, to eliminate invasive vegetation and biomass of grassy and dead wood vegetation, as well as a recolonization of characteristic vegetation in phytocenologically-degraded areas and landscaping thematic paths, both for educational purposes and for the realization of a guided tourism, with low impact on peatlands.

Direct results of the project

‑ restoring the characteristical flora of peatlands;
‑ the hydrological and hydrogeological regimes of peatlands will be optimized;
‑ the anthropogenic pressure will decrease;
‑ a rational and sustainable tourism;
‑ elimination or reduction of invasive species;
‑ the water quality of peatlands will be improved;
‑ a modern system for monitoring and evaluating the hydrogeological parameters of peatlands will be installed.

Indirect results:

‑ increasing the capacity of ICDCRM and ANANP for the rehabilitation and ecological reconstruction of peatlands;
‑ improving the internal activities of ICDCRM and ANANP in the field of hydrological and hydrogeological assessment of wetlands / peatlands;
‑ improving the knowledge of large public in the field of peatlands and wetlands;
‑ educating the large public on peatland ecosystems;
‑ restoring the hydrodynamics and interconnectivity of peatlands with neighboring areas;
‑ restoring the peatland-specific fauna and microfauna.
